On June 27, 2025, Fort Kniepass opened in Salzburg’s Saalachtal as a new tourist destination that uniquely combines history, adventure, and culinary delights. The centerpiece is the VIPER SLIDE—the longest and highest tube slide in the Alps.
Made of sturdy stainless steel, the dry slide spans a distance of more than 150 meters and descends 56 meters from the historic fortress grounds into the valley, reaching speeds of up to 35 km/h. Equipped with lightand sound effects, integrated timing, and specially designed seat pouches, it offers an intense yet comfortable riding experience.
The slide is embedded in a comprehensive overall concept featuring an adventure trail, exhibition, dining options, and play areas, which reinterprets this historic site. The result is a successful blend of historic scenery and modern recreation, with the slide serving as a central highlight that significantly contributes to the unique character of Fort Kniepass.
