Our Wie-Goliath® (DGM 20 2008 011 065.2) arose from an entirely novel and unique concept: An observation tower equipped with several major slides – taller and more varied than seen hitherto – as well as a high level restaurant.
The inspiration for this super-tower was a natural consequence of the installation, which we erected in the Turbine Hall of the Tate Modern Gallery on London’s South Bank in 2006. Here five different slides up to 26,60m tall were built to suit the existing structure, just as planned for the Wie-Goliath. As a group museum visitors are not known as thrill riders. Nevertheless the demand for the slides was so great, that hour-long queues were the rule. Nearly a million visitors rode the Tate slides during a five months period.
Such success can be replicated by a specially designed Wie-Goliath® built in the right location. From a viewing platform near the top, slide-riders and other visitors can enjoy an extended view of the surrounding countryside or townscape. The tower can accommodate all types of slides made by the Wiegand company.
The distant view opens up from the restaurant, at a height of 17 m, a foretaste of the panorama at the top. The restaurant provides 100 sq.m. covered space and an open gallery with a further 100 sq.m. There the Guests can watch the riders’ descent through the transparent polycarbonate covers of the tubes, while enjoying their meal.
The Wie-Goliath® has something to offer for everyone, young and old, families, tourists and locals. It is a distance attraction with a substantial catchment area.
