The Alpine Coaster Imst was taken into operation at the end of July 2003 after 3 months installation time. With 3535 m length it is the longest one all over the world. Only the Alpine Coaster in the Swiss Churwalden with a length of 3100 m exceeds the 3000 m record.
The riders take 6 – 12 minutes to drive from the top station in 1500 m height to the bottom station 500 m lower. The speed of the double seater sleds is limited down to 40 km/h by the installed centrifugal brakes. 70 curves with 90 to 180 grades, 16 jumps and 25 waves explain the spectacular characteristic of the trackline. The stainless steel tubes are upto 6 m high. The uphill transportation of the sleds is done by an automatic sled transportation device, the guests use the chairlift.
The Alpine Coaster was installed with minimum influence of the landscape. This was the highest priority for the building owners. It was not necessary to move much earth, as the different steel supports, installed with a distance of 3 m, balance differences of the ground. Catch nets and wooden planks are installed alongside the toboggan run in sections higher than 1 m. The characteristic of stainless steel material – maintenance free, corrosion- and wear-resistant as well as fully recycleable – contribute to the good environmental compatibility. Furthermore the operation of the toboggan run is ecologically harmless. There are no pollutions or emissions for air and water. A special plus of this type is the possibility to use it under all weather conditions, because you can run it during rainy weather, and unbelievable during ice and snow. Easily remountable rain covers safe the guests against wetness. In this way the operator has the possibility to earn money the whole year.
A very important fact is the safety of the Alpine Coaster. The sled guidance is safe against derailings and therefore the sleds cannot wobble or even overturn. The sleds are equipped with front and rear buffers which absorb the energy in case of a crash. The same is valid for the backrest. The speed of the sleds can be controlled by the guest by using the brake levers on each side of the sled. The three-point belt, known from the automobil industry, increases the safety standard. The Wiegand selective brake system which is not affected by rain, slows down riders approaching too fast, whilst others driving at an appropriate speed can pass without hindrance. It is installed at the end of the downhill track directly before the brake belt. Despite of the numerous safety measures, also done with the Alpine Coaster Imst, it is not possible to release the guests from his own risk. Attentive and foresighted tobogganing guarantees pure fun for all guests.
